Overview
Our client is a reputable, award-winning consultancy offering comprehensive services in civil, structural, environmental, and geotechnical engineering nationwide. They are known for their innovative, integrated and versatile approach and bring many decades of experience delivering diverse projects across multiple sectors.
They are now seeking an engineer with a relevant background in ground investigation (1–3 years) looking to move away from a high-turnover, multi-site caseload and instead develop in-depth familiarity with a smaller, more focused portfolio of projects gaining detailed knowledge of the sites, clients and technical requirements involved.
This role would suit a candidate who continues to value the engineering aspects of site work but is seeking a better balance between site and office-based responsibilities, rather than looking to move away from site work altogether.
The team holds a site commitment in Manchester scheduled to run for most of the following year, commencing in February, and the successful candidate should expect to be actively engaged in this project from an early stage in their tenure.

Responsibilities

Supporting delivery of geotechnical and site engineering work across a focused, growing portfolio of live projects.

Undertaking site appraisals and reviewing third-party information.

Undertaking desk studies, land contamination assessments, remediation strategies and validation work as required.

Managing site investigations from planning through to completion.

Supporting project management to ensure delivery is in line with the required scope of works and budget.

Interpreting data and producing reports to a suitable professional standard.

Undertaking human health and controlled water risk assessments, and preferably Detailed Quantitative Risk Assessments (DQRA).
Location and Work Pattern

Based at the Liverpool office, with regular site time including a substantial Manchester-based project from February next year for most of the following year.

Roughly 3 days on site, 2 days in the office as a general pattern.

Candidates should be realistically based within commuting/relocating distance of the Liverpool–Manchester corridor — being equidistant between the two, or based in either city, works well.
Requirements

A degree in geology, civil engineering, earth science or a related discipline (2:1 or above where applicable), or equivalent industry background

Approximately 1–3 years' relevant background

Background in ground investigation, or equivalent early-years site engineering track record.

A genuine interest in continuing to engage with site work, but on a smaller number of projects with less constant movement.

Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for liaising with site teams, clients and colleagues.

Strong organisational skills, IT proficiency and technical report-writing ability.

A collaborative, problem-solving approach and good record-keeping discipline.

Competent with MS Word, Excel, Holebase SI, Surfer and MS Project; familiarity with CAD or GIS and geotechnical software such as PDisp or GEO5 would be an advantage.

Willing and able to be based from the Liverpool office, with regular travel to sites including Manchester.

Open to relocation if not already local to the North West — realistically commutable or relocatable to the Liverpool/Manchester area.

Prior exposure to contaminated land, ground engineering or brownfield/former-landfill sites would be beneficial.
