Overview
Our client is a leading consultancy specialising in geo-environmental and geotechnical engineering. They work on a diverse range of projects, including residential developments, commercial buildings, renewable energy projects such as wind farms and coal mining risk assessments.
They are seeking an enthusiastic Graduate Geotechnical / Geoenvironmental Engineer to join their growing team. This is an entry-level position designed to provide structured training and early responsibility. You will gain hands-on experience by supervising ground investigations, carrying out soil and rock logging, soil sampling, collecting and analysing data, and contributing to technical reports, all with guidance and mentoring from senior engineers.
Key Responsibilities

Site investigation supervision: Supervise ground investigation works including borehole drilling, trial pitting, and in-situ testing, ensuring that contractors work safely and in accordance with site-specific RAMS.

Soil and rock logging: Undertake soil and rock logging in line with current geotechnical standards.

Soil sampling: Undertake soil sampling and scheduling for laboratory chemical and geotechnical analysis.

Health & safety risk assessment: Assist in preparing site-specific RAMS, carry out onsite dynamic risk assessments, and promote safe working practices during site activities.

Data collection & analysis: Record and interpret site investigation data, including ground conditions, sampling information, laboratory test results, to support geotechnical and geoenvironmental assessments.

Desk studies: Assist in reviewing historical maps, geological records, and previous reports to identify potential ground-related risks.

Report writing: Contribute to the preparation of factual and interpretative reports by compiling field and laboratory data and drafting sections for review by senior engineers.

Contaminated land assessments: Assisting with human health, controlled waters, and ground gas risk assessments.

Client and subcontractor interaction: Act as a point of contact on site, liaising with clients, contractors, and colleagues as required.

Software use: Learn and apply geotechnical software for analysis and modelling and use logging/database tools such as HoleBaseSI.
Requirements
Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, Environmental Geoscience, Civil Engineering or a related geoscience discipline. A postgraduate geoscience related degree is advantageous but not essential.

Professional background: No prior professional background required; full training will be provided.

Driving licence: Full, valid UK licence essential.

Residency: Must have the legal right to work in the country of employment.
Key Skills

Technical foundation: Strong understanding of geoscience, including geology, soil and rock behaviour, and related analytical techniques.

Practical fieldwork: Ability to supervise contractors, and to log and sample soils and rocks accurately to relevant standards.

IT proficiency: Competence with Microsoft Office; familiarity with geotechnical software desirable (training provided).

Analytical ability: Capacity to evaluate site and laboratory data and contribute to engineering solutions.

Report writing skills: Good foundation in clear, structured writing. Background preparing full site investigation reports is not expected; training will be provided.

Communication: Strong verbal communication skills for liaising with clients, contractors, and colleagues. You should be comfortable using phone for coordination

Teamwork: Ability to work effectively within a team and take direction from senior engineers.

Eagerness to learn: Proactive attitude toward gaining practical and technical experience.

Adaptability: Willingness to travel and work outdoors in varying conditions.
